Membership

joining the united church

Becoming a member of a church is an important step in living out one’s Christian faith.

Becoming a member of The United Church is an invitation that is always extended to visitors and regular attenders (“friends”).

You do not have to be a member to participate in worship, study, fellowship, serving and financial giving of this congregation.

You do need to be a member in order to vote at a congregational meeting or to be an elected member of a board and the Executive Council.

The decision to become a member is between you and God who calls each of us into faith, discipleship, and membership.

If you have questions about becoming a member of The United Church, you may speak to one of the pastors after worship on Sunday, or contact them by email or calling the office.

Frequently Asked Questions About Membership

  • How do I join this church?

You can meet with a pastor and fill out a membership form provided to you.

You and the pastor will schedule a Sunday for you to join the church during the worship service.

Becoming a member of this church involves being baptized and professing your faith in Jesus Christ by saying The United Church’s Covenant (along with the congregation).

You can join by transferring your membership from another church or by profession of faith.

  • How do I get baptized?

If you have never been baptized, you will work with a pastor to schedule your baptism on the day you join.  You will also talk about what baptism means and the meaning of membership.

  • How do I transfer my membership?

If you have completed the membership form, then the church staff will reach out to your former congregation about transferring your membership.

  • Can I be a member of two churches?

If you would like to remain a member of another church, you may become an “associate member”, which is entitled to all the rights and privileges of an active member except the right to vote or hold office.

  • How do I reaffirm my faith or make a profession of faith?

People who join The United Church say the church’s historic Covenant as a way of professing their faith in Jesus Christ and their intention to be his disciple.  The congregation says the Covenant along with them as a way of reaffirming our faith.

  • Is that it?

    Yes and no.

Yes, you will be a member of this church who welcomes you into this community, and who can be a support to you in your life and faith.

    No, it’s just the beginning.

In professing the Covenant, we agree to participate in the life of the church.  We do this by worshipping together, attending classes in person or online, enjoying fellowship with others, serving in the ministry of the church, and by supporting the ministries and mission of the church through our financial giving.

We believe that active membership leads us all into a fuller relationship with God by growing in faith and in our commitment to Christ.

It is a way for all of us to share God’s love with the world.
